We live on an Island that has a lot of rainfall throughout the year, so you could be mistaken in thinking that water is not an issue – but it is.
Around a third of the water we use is simply flushed down the toilet. The water company has to use energy to supply mains water to our homes. We then use more energy heating it up for baths, showers and washing up.
If we used water more efficiently, our supplies would go much further and we would use less energy.
Heating water used in our everyday life produces carbon dioxide (CO2) – by wasting less you will be reducing your home’s CO2 emissions and helping fight climate change.
On average hot water use is responsible for over a fifth of a home’s carbon footprint and makes up 5% of UK’s total CO2 emissions. If every Scottish home reduced their hot water use by 5%, the CO2 saving would be equivalent to taking nearly 47,000 cars off the roads!
You could make considerable savings on your energy bills by trying to make sure that you do not waste hot water.
For instance, spending just one minute less in the shower each day can save each person in a household up to £10 a year in gas bills.
You could save around £250 on your energy bills
