The Scottish Water Warm Pipes campaign offers communities across Scotland a series of simple steps to Heat, Insulate and Protect homes over the winter period.
You can read through these steps and learn more about the campaign below
Heat
- Leave your heating on at a low setting if your home is going to be empty for a while
- Make sure heaters are well-maintained and working properly
- If you are going away for a long time:
- Turn off your water supply and drain the system – a registered plumber should be able to give you advice about this
- Leave contact details of someone who has a key to your property with your neighbour in case of an emergency
Insulate
- Check that your water tank is fitted with an insulation jacket or the top and sides of the tank can be wrapped with suitable insulation material
- Don’t place loft insulation under the tank
- Make sure that toilet cisterns, water tanks or pipes in exposed places or unheated outbuildings are insulated properly
Protect
- Repair any leaks at taps or valves
- Fit draught excluders to your doors and windows
- Look out for your neighbours – especially the frail, elderly and vulnerable
- Make sure you have adequate buildings and contents insurance (deleted full stop)
| Locate your stop valve
In addition to the three steps above Scottish Water also recommends that customers know how to locate their stop valve and keep a note of necessary telephone numbers such as a registered plumber.
To get advice on how to locate your stop valve, insulate your pipes and what to do if a pipe bursts or freezes, Scottish Water has produced a series of online films which can be viewed by visiting www.scottishwater.co.uk/warmpipes.
