Buying an efficient car

Lower road tax = better fuel efficiency

When buying a new or used car, choosing an efficient vehicle doesn’t mean compromising on style or features.

There can be large variations in the level of carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted by cars within the same market category, and even by the same model of a car registered in different years.

The handy search tool below allows you to compare the energy efficiency of new and used cars registered since 2001. You can search by either the size of car, or by a particular make and model.

For each car the results will show the:

  • Amount of CO2 the car emits in grams of carbon per kilometre
  • Road tax band that covers the car based on its CO2 emissions. Tax band prices
  • Miles Per Gallon (MPG) - number of miles the car will travel on a single gallon of fuel
  • Fuel cost - the lower the figure in this column the more economical the car will be
  • Type of fuel used by the car.

Click on the appropriate tab to switch between searching by vehicle size or by make and model. Then select your option from the drop down list:

Diesel, petrol, electric hybrid, electric battery

Tax bands

Cars registered on or after 1 March 2001 (based on fuel type and CO2 emissions)

Vehicle tax rates for cars registered on or after 1 March 2001 are split into 13 bands depending on CO2 emissions. The amount you'll pay depends on which band your car is in. The lower a car’s emissions, the lower the vehicle tax payable on it.

First year rates - Cars registered on or after 1 April 2010 (based on fuel type and CO2 emissions)

From 1 April 2010, anyone buying a new car will pay a different rate of vehicle tax for the first tax disc. These are known as 'first year rates'. From the second tax disc onwards, the standard rate of vehicle tax will apply.
