The UK will help to develop and drive forward new Sustainable Development Goals for all G20 nations to adhere to, environment secretary Caroline Spelman has said.
She will take the goals, which tackle food security, water and sustainable energy, to the Rio+20 UN Conference on Sustainable Development in June, building on the existing Millennium Development Goals. It is then hoped that it will encourage global nations to create a more sustainable economy.
Ms Spelman's goals were created after the UK government criticised other nations for not making enough progress on these issues.
"I will be pushing for real progress on new goals to set us on the right path to a greener and more sustainable world," Ms Spelman told green groups at London Guildhall.
"We want to see countries acknowledging the true value of nature to our economy, by reflecting its worth in their accounts. The UK is a world leader in this field, and I will be making the case for all nations to match our progress."
Nations will also be encouraged to make a political declaration towards long-term sustainable growth, making efficient use of natural resources and reducing carbon emissions.
